Turn every bath into a softer-feeling, spa-worthy soak. City water carries chlorine or chloramine to keep it safe on its long trip through the mains. By the time it fills your tub that job is done, yet it is still in the warm water you soak in and the steam you breathe. The Bath Ball® hangs on your tub spout and reduces chlorine, chloramine and other unwanted contaminants as the bath fills, so the water that reaches you feels the way a bath should.
Customers tell us they notice it from the first bath: water that feels softer and silkier, skin that feels smoother and less dry afterward, hair that feels softer and no swimming-pool smell or other unpleasant odors rising from the tub. It is a favorite with parents at bath time, and there is nothing to plumb and nothing about your routine to change.
- A softer-feeling bath: less chlorine and chloramine in the water you soak in.
- No unpleasant odors: the swimming-pool smell and other odors fade from a hot bath.
- Hangs in seconds: its loop goes over the spout. No tools, nothing to plumb.
- Five colors: White, Chrome, Black, Pink and Blue, all with the same authentic cartridge.
How it works
The Bath Ball is a reusable BPA-free ABS housing with one replaceable cartridge inside. Water falls into the open top of the ball, through the flat stainless steel mesh face of the cartridge, across a deep bed of three kinds of media spheres and out of the base into the tub. Because the ball holds a full bed of media rather than a thin screen at the spout, the water spends longer in contact with it.
Ceramic mineralization spheres
White ceramic spheres help balance the water's minerals and pH, help clarify it, and neutralize chlorine into a harmless form as the water passes.
ERA redox alloy spheres
ERA is Crystal Quest's own copper-zinc redox alloy. Two metals in contact with water behave like a tiny battery: one gives up electrons and chlorine takes them, which neutralizes it into a harmless form. Because it works by reaction, it suits the warm water of a tub fill, and it also reduces low levels of hydrogen sulfide, the rotten egg smell, and some dissolved lead.
Catalytic and coconut carbon spheres
Our premium catalytic and coconut carbon backs up the reactive media. Its vast inner surface helps break down chloramine, the slower disinfectant, and holds the unpleasant odors, organic compounds and pharmaceutical traces that can ride along in city water.
Stainless steel mesh face
One flat, round stainless steel mesh covers the face of the reversible cartridge. The frame on top divides it into six sections, so it looks like six pieces, but it is one mesh. It holds the spheres in place and catches loose grit on its way to the tub.
What it reduces
Chlorine and chloramine first, plus low levels of hydrogen sulfide, off odors, some organic compounds (VOCs), pharmaceutical traces, some lead and other dissolved metals, and loose grit. The Bath Ball does not soften water, lower TDS or disinfect. The "What it reduces" guide on this page shows which media handle each one.
Who it is for
- Homes on city water treated with chlorine or chloramine. You do not need to know which one your city uses.
- Anyone whose skin feels tight or dry after a bath, or who notices the chlorine smell as a hot bath fills.
- Families with little ones at bath time.
- Renters, and anyone who wants nothing to plumb. It hangs on the spout and lifts off when you are done.
- A thoughtful gift: Pink and Blue make a sweet present for a new baby.
Five colors, one filter
Every color is the same Bath Ball with the same cartridge, so choose the one that suits your bathroom. White is the original Bath Ball color and a great pick for hard water. Chrome brings an elevated, polished look. Black is simple luxury for a clean, modern bathroom. Pink is for pink lovers, or a sweet gift for a baby girl, and Blue the same for a baby boy.
How it hangs
Most tub spouts take it in three easy steps, with no tools. On a faucet with no place for the loop, the Bath Ball Hook gives it one.
On the spout

On the Bath Ball Hook
For a faucet with no place for the loop, such as a tall or curved tub filler, add the optional Bath Ball Hook. It is a small stainless steel hook with an adhesive back. Peel off the backing, stick the hook on the side of the faucet tip, near the outlet, so the ball will hang right beneath it, then hang the ball on the hook. If you are unsure about your faucet, send our team a photo.

Care steps are under Maintenance & care, and what comes in the box is under Specifications. Keep a spare replacement cartridge on hand, and add the Bath Ball Hook to the same order if your faucet needs it.
Common questions
Do bathtub filters really work?
They work when the filter is matched to the job. The Bath Ball is built to reduce chlorine and chloramine as your tub fills, using a cartridge of catalytic and coconut carbon spheres, ERA copper-zinc redox spheres and ceramic spheres. It does not soften water or lower TDS, so it will not change hardness, and a TDS meter reads about the same before and after.
What is a bath ball filter?
A bath ball filter is a water filter shaped like a ball that hangs on your tub spout. It is not a bath bomb and adds nothing to the water. The Bath Ball® holds a replaceable cartridge that reduces chlorine, chloramine and other unwanted contaminants as the tub fills, and it comes in five colors.
Who makes the original Bath Ball?
Crystal Quest, since 2004. There's a reason no one else can call theirs a Bath Ball®: it's our registered trademark. Look-alikes sold under other names are not made, tested or backed by us, and they do not take our authentic cartridges.
Does the Bath Ball remove lead?
It reduces some. The ERA copper-zinc spheres reduce some dissolved lead and other soluble metals by reaction as the water passes, so you get partial reduction. It is not a dedicated lead filter, so if your home has lead pipes or a water test shows lead, use a filter made for lead on the water you drink.
Why does my bath water smell like chlorine?
Water utilities add chlorine or chloramine to keep tap water safe on its way to your home, and you notice it most as a warm tub fills. The Bath Ball reduces both as the water passes through, so the swimming-pool smell fades. If the smell changes suddenly, call your water utility.
Does a bath filter soften water?
No. It does not remove the minerals that make water hard, so it is not a water softener and it will not stop scale or spots. What it does reduce is chlorine, and many customers tell us their skin feels less dry and their hair softer after a Bath Ball bath, even though the water is not softened. If hardness is your concern, pair it with a water softener.
Does a bath filter slow down how fast the tub fills?
Not much. The Bath Ball works best at 2 to 3 gpm at 60 psi and handles up to a 4 to 5 gpm tub fill, so you can run the bath much the way you always do. If your spout runs faster and some water spills over the top, ease the tap back a little so all of it passes through the ball.
How long does a bath filter last, and how often do I change the cartridge?
About 2,000 to 2,500 gallons of bath water, which is typically 12 to 18 months. Daily baths and hard water use one up sooner. Replace it sooner if the flow through the ball slows or the chlorine smell comes back.
Is the Bath Ball a good bath filter for babies and kids?
It is a favorite with parents. The Bath Ball hangs up on the spout, out of the way, and reduces chlorine while the tub fills, so the bubbles go into water with less chlorine. As with any bath, check the water temperature first and stay with little ones in the tub.
Can I use a bath filter in the shower?
No. The Bath Ball is made to hang on a tub spout. For the shower, Crystal Quest shower filters do the same job with their own cartridge.
